Ben Diedrich on Arthur C. Clarke

Arthur C. Clarke's stories moved me for his effortless portrayal of humanity and the enormous forces of the universe, intelligent and non, in the same literary canvas. Encounters with grand intelligences in 2001: A Space Odyssey and Rendezvous with Rama, travels across the solar system and galaxy in Imperial Earth and Songs of Distant Earth, our development in wikipedia:Childhood's End, or the beauty (and tension) of racing on a wind of solar photons in The Wind from the Sun, while fictional, capture the awe I feel with our place in the universe. From the depths of time and trouble that led from early organisms to humanity, to the breathtaking progress of human ingenuity in recent years, to the unknowable future of ourselves in the coming decades, the human experience within the universe is astonishing. Sir Arthur Charles Clarke had a singular talent for communicating that sentiment, and I am forever grateful for that influence on me.
